In the world of downhill helmets, there seem to be two shapes available--those made for relatively large, round heads, and those for relatively narrow, pointy craniums. While riders in the former category enjoy a plethora of options from Bell and Giro, those in the latter category--like myself--have traditionally been faced with spending upwards of $375 for a helmet, or cutting up beer coasters for helmet shims.
But now, Swedish body-armor maker POC offers the Cortex DH and Flow full-face helmets. I took the POC Flow down to my local shop and weighed it alongside the Giro Remedy (1.2 lbs.) and Bell Drop (1.04 lbs.). While the POC Flow, at 1.04 lbs., weighs on par with the other two, it has more than twice as many vents as either--11, including a pair of surprisingly useful ear ports. The chin bar is also designed to minimize fogging issues from breathing. But, most importantly, in the category of pinhead fit, there was no competition.
The primary deciding factor in choosing a downhill full-face helmet is often the look rather than fit or safety. In this category, the jury will likely be split. Some will find the helmet's austere Swedish palette too boring, while others, like me, will appreciate the Flow's minimized "Darth Vader Black" or "Storm Trooper White" aesthetic.
The Flow pairs well with POC's anti-fogging Iris goggles--which have a proprietary non-replaceable strap lined with silicone grips that keep them secure--but other goggles may slip around due to the Flow's slightly conical shape. The wide range of pad options makes it worth taking the time to get just the right fit.
